Underwater Breathing Guide for Minecraft BE: All Ways
You get roughly 15 seconds of air underwater before drowning starts, which isn't enough to properly explore a monument, loot a shipwreck, or do much of anything productive. Here's every way to extend that time, from free tricks to a permanent fix.
Free Tricks
No crafting required for any of these. Place a door on the seafloor and it creates a 1-block air pocket you can surface into. Sugar cane works the same way if placed on underwater sand. Magma blocks refill your air bar instantly when you stand on them, though you'll take chip damage unless you crouch. A torch placed underwater also creates a brief air pocket before the water breaks it, though the timing is finicky.

Respiration Enchantment
Respiration is a helmet enchantment with three tiers, each adding roughly 15 seconds of breath:
- No enchantment: about 15 seconds
- Respiration I: about 30 seconds
- Respiration II: about 45 seconds
- Respiration III: about 60 seconds
Get it from an enchanting table, librarian villagers, or fishing. Pair it with Aqua Affinity, another helmet enchantment, since mining underwater is 5 times slower without it.

Turtle Shell Helmet
Wearing a turtle shell grants 10 seconds of the Water Breathing effect the moment you enter water, and that time stacks on top of Respiration. With Respiration III, you're looking at roughly 70 seconds total before you start drowning. The tradeoff is armor value: turtle shells protect less than diamond or netherite, so they're better for casual exploration than monument raids.
Crafting one takes 5 Scutes. Get two turtles to breed on a beach by feeding them seagrass, wait for the eggs to hatch at night, then feed the babies seagrass until they mature. Each adult drops one scute.

Potion of Water Breathing
The standard option for serious underwater work. A regular potion lasts 3 minutes, the extended version lasts 8. Brew nether wart into a water bottle for an Awkward Potion, then add a pufferfish. Redstone dust extends the duration. Pufferfish come from fishing or from pufferfish mobs in warm oceans.
On Bedrock, witch hut cauldrons have a 10% chance of already containing a Water Breathing potion, so check there first if you find one early. Brewing Night Vision alongside it (golden carrot plus awkward potion) solves the other half of the problem, since everything underwater is dark even when you can breathe fine.

Conduit
The permanent solution. A conduit grants unlimited underwater breathing, night vision, faster mining, and it attacks nearby hostile mobs within its range, functioning like an ocean-based beacon.
Crafting one requires a Heart of the Sea, found only in buried treasure chests, surrounded by 8 Nautilus Shells. Shells drop from drowned at a low rate or can be bought from wandering traders for 5 emeralds each. To activate the conduit, build a frame out of prismarine, prismarine bricks, dark prismarine, or sea lanterns. Sixteen blocks arranged around it gives minimum activation, while a full 42-block frame extends the effect radius to 96 blocks.
